Every September, Porthcawl takes on a personality of its own as Elvis fans, tribute artists and music lovers descend on the South Wales seaside town for a weekend of rock ’n’ roll, flamboyant outfits and larger-than-life characters.
The Elvis Festival is a brilliant subject for street photography. Beyond the music and the iconic costumes, it’s the people that make it - the expressions, the interactions, the unexpected moments and the sheer individuality on display.
Armed with my camera, I was drawn to the colour, character and little details unfolding around the town. From Elvis-inspired outfits and oversized sideburns to candid encounters and moments of humour, there was no shortage of photographic opportunities.
I love photographing events like this because nothing needs to be staged. It’s about observing, anticipating and capturing those fleeting moments that reveal something about a place and the people who bring it to life.
These 30 photographs are my take on the Porthcawl Elvis Festival — a little slice of South Wales, seen through my lens, celebrating its characters, atmosphere and unmistakable rock ’n’ roll spirit.
