Tenerife – an island of dramatic volcanic landscapes, golden beaches, colourful villages, and year-round sunshine. It's a place where rugged coastlines meet vibrant streets, where locals embrace a slower pace of life, and where every corner seems to offer another perfect frame. The light here is something special too — constantly shifting as it dances across volcanic rock, reflects from the Atlantic Ocean, and pours through narrow streets lined with traditional Canarian architecture. For a street photographer, it's an inspiring place to explore.
Recently, I found myself wandering the island's bustling towns and quiet coastal villages while enjoying a well-earned holiday. As much as it was a chance to switch off and relax, anyone who knows me will understand that the camera was never going to stay in the bag for long.
Because when you arrive somewhere as visually captivating as Tenerife, the photography begins almost immediately.
Hitting the Streets with the Fuji XT5
Whenever I wasn't exploring the coastline or enjoying the island's incredible scenery, I headed into the streets with my Fuji XT5. Whether it was wandering through colourful plazas, discovering hidden alleyways, or watching everyday life unfold at a local café, there was always something worth photographing.
The Fuji XT5 is the perfect companion for this kind of travel photography. Compact enough to carry everywhere yet incredibly capable, it captured every texture of the volcanic landscapes, every beam of warm evening light, and every spontaneous moment with ease. From bright midday sunshine to the softer golden light as the sun disappeared behind Mount Teide, it never missed a beat.
Finding Inspiration Around Every Corner
One of the things I loved most about Tenerife was how varied it felt. One moment you're surrounded by dramatic coastal views, and the next you're strolling through a quiet village where life moves at its own gentle pace. It's these unscripted moments that always draw me in — neighbours chatting outside their homes, fishermen returning with the day's catch, dogs on every corner, and tourists pausing to take it all in.
That's what street photography is all about for me. There's nothing staged or manufactured. It's simply about observing, anticipating, and capturing genuine moments as they naturally unfold.
Sunsets, Seafood and Slowing Down
Of course, no trip to Tenerife would be complete without enjoying the island's incredible food. Fresh seafood, traditional Canarian dishes, tapas shared with a cold local beer, and evenings spent watching the sun disappear into the Atlantic became part of the routine. It was the perfect balance between switching off, exploring somewhere new, and finding creative inspiration.
Sometimes the best photographs come when there's no schedule to follow. Just a camera over your shoulder, beautiful light, and the freedom to wander. Tenerife offered all of that in abundance, and it's a destination I'll certainly be returning to with a camera in hand.
